Mariella

I’d been pacing for hours. I refused to sit still. If I did, my fears would consume me. Leena and Jeneva tried in vain to distract me but I could tell they were both concerned as well.

Jeneva kept checking surveillance equipment hoping for more information.

Leena pretended she wasn’t worried. She had faith in Axtin’s ability to stay alive against a hostile enemy, we all did. But I could tell she was anxious by her distracted air.

It was sweet, in a way. I was glad to see that Leena found someone to care about so deeply.

But that didn’t change the fact that something had dropped out of the sky, and no one knew what it was.

The doors to the docking bay abruptly opened and the members of various strike teams strode in. No one looked injured, but I still held my breath. When strike team one entered the room, I dashed forward before I realized what I was doing.

“Tu’ver,” my voice broke on his name as I collided with his solid chest and locked my arms around his waist. “I was so worried.”

He encircled me in his arms, one hand around my waist and the other cupping the back of my head.

“It’s all right. I’m fine,” he said in a soothing tone, quiet enough so only I could hear him.

“Look at that,” I heard someone, Sakev I think, say behind us. “Tu’ver found a human woman to tolerate him.” There was a small ripple of laughter, quickly silenced by one stern look from Tu’ver.

I grinned against his chest, then I met Leena’s surprised gaze. With everything going on, I never got the chance to tell her about me and Tu’ver.

Whoops.

“What did you find?” I asked, looking up at Tu’ver. I’d deal with the fallout with Leena later.

“A ship like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Tu’ver replied. I swear there was a touch of admiration in his voice. “But completely abandoned.”

“There weren’t any…” I couldn’t bring myself to say the word bodies. Tu’ver shook his head, perplexed.

“We have a mystery on our hands, it seems,” Vrehx said, drawing everyone’s attention. “Perhaps you three could lend your skills.”

“Us?” Jeneva said, sounding excited as she stepped closer to Vrehx. He smiled warmly at her.

“Yes. The ship is quite large. It would take ages to do a thorough search. Jeneva, I’d like you to use your empathic abilities to sense survivors. The odds are low, but I’d like to be sure,” Vrehx explained.

“Yes, sir,” Jeneva grinned giving Vrehx a sassy little salute. Vrehx chuckled and shook his head before turning to my sister.

“Leena, I’d like you to gather samples of anything you think can be analyzed in the lab,” he instructed. Leena replied with only a curt nod. Then Vrehx turned to me.

“Mariella,” he said. “Tu’ver tells me you’re an expert at locating and retrieving lost information.”

“Oh,” I replied, a deep blush coloring my cheeks. I don’t know why I felt bashful all of a sudden. I was excellent at my job, but the thought of Tu’ver singing my praises made me giddy.
